DICKENSON COUNTY LEADERS TRAVEL TO RICHMOND FOR THE SWVA LEGISLATIVE WEEK 2024

DICKENSON COUNTY, Va. – Last week, Dickenson County Board of Supervisor members, along with representatives from economic development, the Dickenson County Industrial Facilities Authority (IDA), tourism, the town of Haysi, and Addiction Recovery Care traveled to Richmond to lobby on behalf of economic and community development projects, and identified needs for Dickenson County.

While in Richmond, members met with elected officials from the Virginia General Assembly, Virginia Housing, the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP), the Tobacco Commission, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the Commissioner of Behavioral Health, Virginia Tourism, Rural Development, and Attorney General Jason Miyares.

Current Board of Supervisors chair Shelbie Willis, who recently was sworn in for her fifth term representing the Kenady district, has attended several annual SWVA Legislative week trips over the years.  “This was one of the most productive trips I have ever attended,” said Mrs. Willis.  “The Dickenson County delegation was well-received and people were enthusiastic about the work we are doing.  I was impressed with how well our staff members represent the County and how well they conduct themselves during the meetings we attended.”

Many topics were discussed, including the Wildwood Recovery Center and former Ervinton Elementary school rehab projects, the significant need for affordable housing solutions, as well as several other economic development projects that are at some phase of development across the county.  Board members and staff utilized the opportunity to share important progress updates, but to also learn about ever changing funding programs offered by state partners.

“There is no way to measure the value received in making the trip to Richmond,” said County Administrator, Larry Barton .  “The level of willingness to assist us with our efforts is remarkable.”  A common theme heard throughout the week was use of the word “innovative” when discussing the County and IDA’s decision to co-locate the Wildwood Recovery Center on the same property as the Red Onion Industrial Park development. “In an economy where a lack of workforce can be the deal breaker for a company wanting to locate in a specific area, partnering with Addiction Recovery Care to bring their ‘Crisis to Career’ treatment model, will allow the County to uniquely leverage itself when marketing the industrial park.  This will be a game changer in our efforts to diversify our economy and employment opportunities.”

Staff members will be working over the next few weeks to identify action items and a plan specifically related to outcomes of the meetings.
