E-911

Dickenson County Emergency Communication Center (DCECC), utilizes 11 dispatchers who serve as the “first” first responders gathering important information and relaying it in a timely matter to the proper police, fire and ems personnel of Dickenson County, Together saving lives, protecting property, and stopping crime.

9-1-1 Emergency Calls
Dickenson County ECC dispatchers are highly trained and dedicated. Through a combined effort with Wise County, Lee County and The City of Norton, DCECC dispatchers utilize state of the art equipment, sharing critical resources and data between agencies. DCECC handles 9-1-1 calls via traditional telephones as well as cell phones from citizens and visitors to Dickenson County.

The DCECC performs emergency medical dispatch on all medical emergency calls.
What is Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD):  Medical Emergencies are some of the most serious calls taken in the dispatch center. Time is often critical. What happens in the time the caller dials 9-1-1 until an ambulance arrives on scene can mean the difference between life and death for a patient. Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) is the bridge for the caller between their 9-1-1 phone call and the arrival of on-scene responders.

DCECC uses “The National Academy EMD Protocol Medical Priority Dispatch System”. In following these EMD protocols we ensure that all dispatchers effectively evaluate the medical situation by following a questioning protocol. This questioning protocol allows the dispatcher to send the appropriate resource which provides better care for the patient and safety for those who are responding. EMD also provides life saving instructions, whether it is giving simple airway maintenance instruction, controlling bleeding, delivering a baby or CPR instruction.

Training
Before dispatchers are fully released for duty they must  undergo 40 hours of Department of Criminal Justice Training,  24 hours of EMD training, 16 hours of  Virginia Crime Information Center & National Crime Information Center (VCIC-NCIC) training.  In addition to in house policy and procedures.
